How Much Does Geckos Cost?

Geckos are lizards found in different parts of the world, including Asia, Africa, and Hawaii.

One might think, how much do geckos cost?

Geckos cost anywhere from $10 – $200.

Gecko is the common name for any member of Gekkota, a large order of squamate reptiles native to warm climates throughout the world.

There are about 1,500 known species classified into 26 families.

They range in size from 30 mm (1.2 inches) to 150 mm (6 inches). Most gecko species live on trees; others inhabit caves or have become the arboreal following loss of their original habitat.

The word “gecko” comes from a corruption of the Sinhalese word “geka”, meaning “lizard”.

Geckos are found in warm climates worldwide and inhabit various habitats, including deserts, forests and cities.

They will introduce themselves into a home with an open window or door leading to a suitable habitat.

To remove a gecko, it is necessary to employ the help of a professional pest control company that can identify how much geckos cost.

Common leopard gecko price

The common leopard gecko price is $20, and that’s just the beginning.

The most important thing about leopard geckos is that they’re primarily nocturnal, sleeping during the day and awake at night.

This is due to their activity level during the dark hours, which includes hunting, foraging, and racing around on ceilings and walls in search of prey.

Their diet is filled with crickets, waxworms, mealworms and super worms.

You may be wondering how much a leopard gecko eats in one sitting.

An adult can consume up to 20 medium crickets every night while newborns eat around 2-4 crickets every day; however, the total number of live prey taken in will vary depending on the individual gecko.

This means that they’re not expensive to feed due to their small prey sizes and minimal food intake, even though we still have other expenses which occur regularly.

On average, I spend around $1 every other day to keep my two leopard geckos fed, and there are times when I spend a lot less when I have extra crickets.

Leopard gecko cost of living

The main expenses we face are the initial set-up costs, the cage’s maintenance, and the supplies needed for our pets to live happy and healthy life.

The first step is to buy an appropriate enclosure that will fit our geckos. The size of the enclosure depends on the number of geckos you plan to house.

I have two leopard geckos, so I bought a cage that would fit them plus their supplies, approximately 12″L x 30″W x 18″H.

The second things we need to buy are thermometers and heat lamps (or other heat sources).

Leopard geckos are from a warm climate, and they rely on their environment’s natural warmth.

To replicate their habitat, we need to provide an artificial heating source (heat lamp) for them when the ambient temperature drops below 70 degrees Fahrenheit because their instinct is to hide in places that retain body heat.

If you were to leave them in a cool room overnight, they would die.

Leopard gecko cost of maintaining the reptile environment

Next, we need to buy substrate, bedding and cage decorations.

You put the substrate on the bottom of your enclosure to make up most of the floor space.

Bedding is something you add to the top because it absorbs liquids and odours.

Bedding also makes the bottom layer easier to clean up when we wash the substrate.

Still, I would only recommend using paper-based bedding (like aspen wood shavings, paper towels or recycled newspaper) due to its most accessible maintenance. However, this is not an inexpensive option.

If money is a significant concern for you, the least expensive option is to use clean paper towels instead.

The decorations are just things you add to your leopard gecko cage that brightens it up, makes it more interesting, and adds safety for your reptile pet.

Leopard gecko food costs

To keep our pets healthy, there are also certain foods and supplies we need to purchase.

A healthy diet will help us maintain a happy, active pet (and hopefully avoid any sickness!).

Feeding your leopard gecko is very simple.

You add live prey into the cage at night and leave it there until morning when you remove any uneaten remains.

The best way to calculate the total cost you spend on your pets is to consider how much you pay for food, supplies and other goods.

This was a fundamental rundown of what you will need when caring for a leopard gecko.

You may have noticed that there are still some expenses I did not mention – things like emergency kits, vet visits, ectoparasite treatments and other miscellaneous items.

I also didn’t say the price of the initial set-up costs because that will depend on how elaborate you make your cage or how many hidden expenses there are for you to discover further down the line.

Conclusion

Geckos are a popular pet choice for those who want easy-to-take care of reptiles.

The black leopard gecko is the most common type, but there are other colours available as well.

Leopard geckos need to live in an environment with specific temperatures that can be difficult to maintain without proper heating equipment and humidity control.

There’s also food costs to consider – they eat about every two days so you’ll need plenty of insects on hand!

If you’re considering getting a gecko as your next pet, it would be wise to do some research into how much one will cost before making any decisions.
